June 21st has always resonated poignantly with me; my dear late daddy’s birthday was June 20th, so every year his birthday, the longest day and invariable Father’s Day merged into one! Great memories!
This year, as with the previous five, we are coming towards the end of two glorious, hot, relaxing weeks in a beautiful cove, on the northeast corner of Crete. Our suite is six levels up from the beach; we travel around the cove by buggy or funicular (!) and our days fall into that wonderful holiday routine of rest and relaxation.
There is something about holidays like this; no pressure to perform; no need to do anything, but a space to reflect and look to the future. The Mediterranean is as blue as it can be; the sky likewise and there is definitely a feeling of inspiration as you take in the beautiful landscape. Sunsets are, of course, popular subjects for photography and it’s fair to say my albums are full of them (it appears I took over one hundred one year in Santorini!), however, the joy of being in a cove with so many levels, means many different perspectives of sunset! Just like life really!

So today’s sunrise, at 0603 and sunset at 2034, gave us fourteen hours and thirty one minutes of glorious sun! Much of it was spent in a supine position or swimming. There were, of course, times for food and wine; given that our home for two weeks, contains amazing five restaurants, focusing on Cretan sustainability, and the key suppliers are named in the menus!
OK, I wasn’t awake to see the sunrise, however, I managed pictures of the sunset and definitely made the most of my waking hours! Sadly, we return home on Tuesday and then I’m off to Amsterdam on Thursday to be keynote at a science conference! The summer solstice may inspire poignant memories, but it marks the turning point in the year, where we can definitely carpe diem!
